Wig Winter Maintenance & Care Guide (Synthetic or Human Hair Wigs)
It is easier to care for your wig in winter than in summer. With the cold and the rain, you go out of the house less often, so the wig spends more time undercover and does not get dirty as much; it is also less affected by the sun, the main cause of discoloration of natural hair wigs. So much for the visible side of the wig: if we talk about the hidden side, the one that sticks to our skin, there are also advantages: as we move less and it is less hot, we don't sweat as much, so the wig also stays cleaner for longer.
Is winter the perfect season for wig maintenance? Almost, but there are some details that are worth knowing. In this post, we will talk about wig maintenance in winter.
But first, a detail. When talking about maintenance, there is a huge difference between synthetic wigs, whose hair is made of fibers, and real hair wigs. Okay, human hair wigs lose their color in summer if they are not treated with appropriate products, but in all other respects, real hair wigs are much more resistant than synthetic hair wigs. They accept dyes and withstand more hair products and you can use the hair dryer or curling irons with them, products totally forbidden if we talk about synthetic wigs.
This point, the heat, is the reason why winter is a dangerous season for the maintenance of synthetic wigs: heaters, radiators, and some habits, such as turning the oven on, are threats to your synthetic wig.
Keep Your Wig Away From Dangers
If your wig is synthetic, you must be aware that heat is your wig's worst enemy. It also happens that in real hair wigs excessive heat can affect the adhesive of the inner side of the compliment, but in the case of synthetic wigs, the danger is much greater, because it affects the fibers themselves.
That is why it is very important to be aware of the dangers, often hidden in domestic routines. For example, when cooking. Whenever you cook, protect your wig with a hat or, even better, cook without your wig. If you like to get too close to the fire, forget about cooking with a wig. This also applies to the oven: be very careful when you open it.
Another dangerous habit is typically winter reading with a blanket and a lamp. If you read with the lamp very close to your head, remove the wig first, or buy a more powerful bulb and read-only with the light of the habituation.
Store Your Wig
If we are clear about the rule of always keeping our wig away from any heat source, then we already have a rough idea of where to place our wig to rest: in the area furthest away from radiators or hot air vents. This also applies to real hair wigs, because, as already mentioned, adhesives also lose their effectiveness if subjected to high temperatures. Pick a spot in the room with no nearby hot spots (no bedside table if you have a flexo, of course), and place your wig there.
The best way to keep a wig when you are not wearing it is on a wig stand. There are models of various materials, such as porex (porous plastic), hard plastic or fabric. There is no one model that is better than another, but you should keep in mind that if you are going to style the wig, which is normal, you want the stand to be solid enough to withstand the tugging, and it will also help if you can insert pins to secure the wig to the stand. The heavier the stand, the more stable it will be when you handle it.
Cleaning Wigs
Cleaning the wig is different depending on whether it is made of natural or synthetic hair. In both cases you will need a basin, water and understand three basic rules:
1) Never rub.
2) Do not comb wet wigs.
3) If you want volume, hang it down while it is still wet and let it dry that way.
To clean a wig, simply soak it in warm water for a few minutes. If the water becomes cloudy, which it usually does, repeat the process until the water is cleaner. What product should I use to clean it? If it is a synthetic wig, soap will suffice; if it is a real hair wig, shampoo, and conditioner.
To dry the wig, it is best to spread it on a towel and cover it so that the towel absorbs the moisture. Since the wig will still be damp, it will need to be left on the stand to dry on its own. If you have a real hair wig, you can speed up the process with a blow dryer but if you can avoid this, all the better, as it will make your wig last longer.
